More about Sound Bath Meditation
Sound Meditation has ancient roots in cultures throughout the world, and has been used for healing and accessing expanded states of awareness for centuries. Instruments that emit many frequencies at once (overtones), when worked with intentionally, create sounds that help us to access a deep meditative state. These entrancing sounds not only help the mind to access a quieter state, but also work with the body to allow a letting go of tensions, and to find a sense of peace and physical ease. Reported benefits of sound bathing include; calming the mind, releasing stress and anger, establishing healthier thought patterns, accessing and releasing trauma, feeling a calm physical energy and a sense of spiritual wellness.
The Science/How Does it Work?
Sympathetic resonance is a phenomenon where an object vibrates in response to the vibration of a nearby object with the same or a similar natural frequency. Essentially, when one object (like a tuning fork or musical instrument) is set into vibration, it causes vibrations in another object, without direct physical contact, as long as the second object has the same or a similar resonant frequency.
This occurs because the vibrating object generates sound waves or vibrations in the air, and if those vibrations are similar to the natural frequency of a nearby object, that object will start to vibrate in harmony with the first one.
For example: When one string of a guitar or other stringed instrument is plucked, other strings can vibrate sympathetically, especially if they are tuned to similar frequencies.
Sound healing instruments can help to restore an individual’s inherent vibration via ‘sympathetic resonance’. The sound waves allow an area of imbalance to be brought back into balance through a ‘like vibration’, a vibration that matches that area’s original frequency of vibration. The instrument’s pure, vibrational sound waves reach the area of imbalance, the weak or dissonant frequency is transformed, and optimal resonance is restored.

Another interesting phenomenon is Entrainment. When you participate in a sound bath, you will experience various sound frequencies from instruments like singing bowls, gongs, drums, and rattles. These sounds, particularly the rhythmic or tonal patterns, can influence your brainwave activity, causing it to “entrain” or sync with the frequency of the sound. This process is often referred to as “brainwave entrainment.”
There are different brainwave states, such as:
- Delta waves (deep sleep, deep meditation),
- Theta waves (relaxed, meditative, creative state),
- Alpha waves (calm, relaxed focus),
- Beta waves (alert, active thinking),
- Gamma waves (high concentration or cognitive processing).
During a sound bath, the sound vibrations can encourage the brain to shift into more relaxed states, like theta or alpha, leading to deep relaxation, stress reduction, and often a meditative or trance-like experience.
In addition to brainwaves, other physiological rhythms—like heart rate or breathing—can also sync with the sounds of the experience, helping to create a sense of balance, calm, and well-being. Entrainment in a sound bath helps align the body and mind, promoting healing and relaxation.

A notable quote regarding the effectiveness of sound healing comes from Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, a physician and pioneer in the field of sound healing. He said:
“Sound is one of the most potent forms of healing available to us. The vibrational frequencies of sound can move us on a deep cellular level, awakening our body’s natural ability to heal.”
This quote reflects that sound can influence not just the mind, but also the body on a cellular level, helping to promote healing and balance. Dr. Gaynor, who was known for his work in integrative medicine and sound therapy, emphasized the therapeutic potential of sound and vibration as part of a holistic approach to health.
Our sound baths are not intended to diagnose, prescribe, treat, mitigate or cure any medical condition.
